Don’t forget about me now that it has started to rain.
With the wet weather that has now started , don’t forget that bonsai still need water even if they have lost their leaves and are going to sleep for the winter. Just like in the warmer weather they still need water.
Let’s talk about watering. I use a soil that has more gravel in it and when I water I expect to see water run out the hole or holes in the bottom of the pot. If it doesn’t, I know that I have a problem and my bonsai plant will drown in water if I don’t correct the problem real soon. Yes, I have to be good and sometimes in hotter weather have to water twice in the same day.
For those of you that are using more soil and not a lot of gravel, it is very important that your bonsai plant is not drowning in the water. While watering make sure the water that you are putting on the top of the soil of the bonsai is not standing on the top the soil, you will most likely lose the bonsai. The first thing to do is stop watering the bonsai and let it dry out for a day or two and repot ASAP. You can use chop sticks and push many holes in to the soil so that the water can drain off. Drowning a bonsai is one of the most common problems. Most people think it looks dry so I will water it.
