Unsolved Question

chinese elm defoliation

When defoliating a chinese elm how do I NOT remove the entire petiole? With other broadleaf bonsai, like a sweet gum I have, I can cut each leaf off right behind the leaf leaving the petiole attached. The chinese elm's petiole is so close to the twigs it's almost impossible. Can I just pinch them off?

As you know you need a good eye and steady hands to do this with Chinese elms. I take it you have some large leaves on this tree since Chinese elms are known for having natural small leaves? Though sometimes for some reason they do get BIG.

Try using a large pair of TOE NAIL clippers. You can insert the leaf into the clippers and make the cut much easier. Buy a new pair though so they will be sharp! Of course this method will take a while but it works!

Let us know on the board how this does for you if you try it!

Anyone else have some other ideas? Please post them!

Hi Ken,

I forgot to water my husbands Chinese Elm once and it defoliated itself. If you prefer to control the defoliation try an inexpensive leaf trimmer. Trimmers will get you into those tight spots that you can't reach with shears.
