Unsolved Question

Balcony Bonsai

I have had a bonsai tree on my balcony all summer and it has been doing pretty good. I live in Toronto, Ontario and we get some cold winters here. My question is: how do I winterize by bosai if my balcony is the only place I can keep it. It's a juniper, so I know it won't weather well inside all winter. Any advice would be appreciated. I would hate to see it die. Thanks

If the tree isn't too big you can buy yourself an "Igloo Cooler" or something similar and keep the tree in it over the winter. Checking now and then to make sure the roots are staying moist.(When not frozen) The tree will do just fine in the dark. What the tree can't take is the drying cold winds.

Hope this idea helps!

Hi Debi,

I have a friend that lives in Montreal and he created a teepee-like contraption made of plywood to protect his Juniper and Pine from the harsh wind. It's not pretty, but it cost less than $20 to make and this is how his trees have been protected for years.
